Myths About Dogs

Myth 1: Dogs wag their tails when they are happy.
Although this is usually the case, you should always use caution around a strange dog. Tail wagging can also signal agitation or aggression. Look at the entire dog!

Myth 2: Dogs are sick when their noses are warm.
The temperature of a dogs nose does not indicate health, illness, or fever. The only accurate measure is to take the temperaure with a thermometer. Normal body temperature for a dog is 100-102.5 degrees F.

Myth 3: Dogs should have at least one litter before being spayed.
In addition to contributing to pet overpopulation and needless euthanasias, this actually makes your dog more susceptible to cancer later in life.

Myth 4: Dogs that cower, or are head shy were abused.
In some cases this might be true, but many times it's more because the dog wasn't socialized at an early age, or is afraid of going to the vet, etc.

Myth 5: A dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's mouth.
A dog's mouth carries its own population of bacteria and other infectious organisms. All dog bites should be treated as potential infections!

Myth 6: Dogs should have their noses rubbed in it when they have an accident in the house.
This will only teach them that humans are crazy and want them to eat their poop! Try positive reinforcement instead. When yur pup does his business outside, reward him wih treats and praise.

Myth 7: My dog knows he did something wrong because he looks guilty!
Sorry, guilt is a human emotion! Your dog is merely reacting to a change in your body language that tells him something is wrong!

Myth 8: Pit Bulls have "locking jaws".
In proportion to their size, the Pit Bull jaw structure is no different than any other breed! There is no evidence of any kind of locking mechanism unique to the jaw/teeth of the Pit Bull.

We've finally moved!! We are now located at 490 S. Buffalo, Ste 105. We are still in the same shopping center, just on the corner.
Thank you for your patience during this move. We hope our new location will enable us to give you & your pets even better service!

Welcome to Buffalo Alta Animal Hospital! We are a full-service, family-owned veterinary hospital in Las Vegas, NV. Our goal is to provide the four-legged members of your family with the quality of care and service that you wish to receive from your own physician. We will provide the specific care that your pet needs depending on its lifestyle as well as stage of life. Just like us, puppies and kittens need different care than young and middle-aged pets which, in turn, need different care than our senior pets. In addition to the necessary routine and preventative care, we will take care of your pets when the non-routine and emergency situations arise.

Give us a call to schedule an appointment so that we can meet with you and your pet, complete a comprehensive physical exam, and develop a wellness plan appropriate for you pet’s age and lifestyle. And, of course, call us now in the event of an emergency. Again, we welcome you to our family here at Buffalo Alta Animal Hospital.

This is Romeo. He is a 3 year old DLH. He is neutered and is current on all of his vaccines. He is extremely affectionate! He seems to like children. (As evidenced by my daughter carrying him around, and him seeming to enjoy it.) He has never lived with dogs, but doesn’t seem to object to them.  He is strictly indoor!!

Romeo is currently being fostered, but he needs a forever home! Give us a call if you are interested in adopting this handsome guy! 838-0700.
